Ontario’s police watchdog invokes mandate after fatal shooting in downtown Hamilton

HAMILTON – Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating a fatal police shooting near a GO station in Hamilton.

The Special Investigations Unit says Hamilton police officers responded to a call at about 11 p.m. Friday about an assault that happened outside a bar in the an King William Street and Catharine Street North area.

The SIU says there were reports that someone was armed with a gun.

Shortly after the police arrived, the SIU says an officer recognized a man allegedly involved in the assault walking near the GO station. The SIU says a 36-year-old man was shot and later died in hospital.

Seven investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to investigate this incident.

The SIU investigates whenever police officers are involved in incidents where someone is seriously injured, dies or alleges sexual assault.
