TORONTO – Dalton McGuinty followed in his father’s footsteps by entering provincial politics in 1990.
His father, Dalton Sr., won the riding of Ottawa-South for the Liberals in 1987, but died three years later.
Dalton Jr, won the riding in a byelection in 1990. He was elected leader of the Ontario Liberal Party in a surprise victory in 1996 over front-runner Gerard Kennedy, thus becoming the Leader of the Opposition at Queen’s Park.

McGuinty led his party to a majority government in 2003, and again in 2007.
In 2011, he led the Ontario Liberal Party to a third mandate, this time a minority government.
Before entering politics, McGuinty practised law in Ottawa.
McGuinty, 57, is married and has four grown children.
