‘No reason to say you can’t vote’: Regina brings back drive-thru voting booth for civic election

On October 26th you'll be able to pick Regina's next mayor at the drive-thru. Global News

There’s going to be a new drive-thru in Regina’s downtown, but instead of being a place to pick up a burger or coffee, this drive-thru will serve democracy.

Following what Chief Electoral Officer Jim Nicol called a successful pilot project in 2012, Regina will once again have a drive-thru voting kiosk near city hall for the civic election on Oct. 26.

The booth will be set up right beside city hall on McIntyre Street, inside a loading zone pull-in station.

Election workers will be there to help people fill out the paperwork to vote if they haven’t already registered. Other officials will be on hand to distribute and collect ballots. People can vote in the privacy of their vehicle.

All eligible voters are able to vote at the drive-thru.

In the 2012 civic election, there was only 33 per cent voter turn-out. Nicol said they’re making as many options as possible available so there’s no excuse not to vote.

“We have four days of advance voting polls this year, including three days that are going to be here at city hall and three days here at the drive-thru location,” he explained.

“Those will be open from seven in the morning until six at night.”
