A man is dead following a single vehicle crash in West Kelowna late Wednesday night.

The crash happened at around 10:30 p.m. on Highway 97 near Gorman’s Mill where the driver of a northbound pickup truck lost control before slamming into a rockface.

“Preliminary findings at the scene suggest that the blue Ford F150 pickup left the roadway into the ditch where the vehicle collided with a rock face, before it continued down the roadway where it came to rest in the centre median of the highway,” said RCMP spokesman Jesse O’Donaghey.

“Witnesses at the scene reported that the pickup truck caught fire after leaving the roadway,” said O’Donaghey. “[The blaze] was extinguished by employees of the nearby Gorman’s Mill who were quick to respond to the scene.”

O’Donaghey said the driver of the pickup was ejected from the vehicle upon impact and may not have been wearing a seatbelt.

“He was found to be suffering from serious injuries and rushed to hospital in critical condition, where he sadly later succumbed to those injuries,” he said.

The driver has been identified as a 24 year old West Kelowna man. His name has not been released.

The crash shut down the highway but it has since re-opened.
