The emergency room was closed on June 1, with six ER beds added to long-term care and four beds used for respite, palliative and alternate care.

At the time, the Sunrise Health Region said the services were closed temporarily due to a lack of doctors available in the area. In order to provide 24/7 emergency coverage, the health region said a minimum of four physicians was needed.

The decision was criticized by the opposition NDP saying the area needed acute and emergency services for the town and the surrounding rural areas.

The first doctor will begin orientation on Oct. 3 and the second on Oct. 11.
