An earthquake seismologist confirms that a 2.9 magnitude earthquake hit 14 kilometres east of Vernon on Thursday.
It happened at 12:07 p.m.
Alison Bird with the Geological Survey of Canada says because the earthquake was fairly shallow, about 10 kilometres underground, it was widely felt in areas surrounding Vernon and Lumby.

Bird says it is coincidental that this quake happened just 12 days after a 4.0-magnitude earthquake hit 22 kilometres east of Oliver.
She says B.C. generally experiences about a dozen earthquakes every day, though most of them are too subtle to be felt, or happen in areas without a large population.
Bird says it is a reminder for people in the Okanagan that they live in an earthquake zone and should be prepared.
