Mayor says city could trash waste collection contract

WINNIPEG – Mayor Sam Katz says garbage and recycling collection in Winnipeg has to be “up to snuff”, or else.

“The contractor has to basically provide the services they guaranteed otherwise they could lose the contract or number two they could be penalized financially,” Katz said at City Hall Wednesday morning.

Many Winnipeg neighbourhoods have been plagued by delays getting their new rolling garbage and recycling carts emptied, since the new automated collection system began city-wide last week.

However the contract also gives the company, Emterra Environmental a one month grace-period to work through any problems. Katz says he’s seen some homeowners make mistakes too by putting their containers too close together or putting plastic garbage bags on top of the containers. He says it’s a learning period for both sides.

Meanwhile, the company responsible for the new residential garbage collection system in Winnipeg is apologizing for delays in service. Paulina Leung, Business Development Manager with Emterra Environmental, says crews are working out the kinks as quickly as they can.
