For the past couple of weeks, the parking lot at the University of Lethbridge’s Community Sports Stadium has been offered as free student parking, but that’s about to change.
The university is turning it into a designated, permit-only lot starting Oct. 1.
Lot Q, as it will be known, will offer 200 paid permits. They also come as a package deal with fully-functional Lethbridge Transit bus passes, at a price tag of $200. Both the permits and bus passes will be valid until April 30, 2017.

The passes will be sold on a lottery basis. Students interested in the pass are asked to register online and the 200 lucky drivers will be selected on Friday. Those students will have a small window of time to purchase the passes. The remaining permits that weren’t sold will be available to another batch of students later next week.
Students interested in the parking pass said it’s good to see a compromise being brought forward, but worry it still isn’t enough to solve the ongoing parking dilemma.
“The stadium is a good idea and I can understand the idea of doing the lottery, but I don’t think it’s a permanent solution,” U of L student Riley Swanberg said. “Hopefully the university looks into alternate solutions in the future and that it’s something that’s kept in mind in future developments.”
Parking Services said you must be a student to enter the lottery for a parking permit at Lot Q. Meanwhile, meetings continue to be held with faculty and students, to come up with further solutions to the parking frustrations.
