Parks Canada officials said they are saddened by the deaths, and that while they have been working to reduce bear deaths in Banff National Park, the rail line continues to be a problem area.

The deaths come despite bear-proofing garbage bins, enforcing group hiking requirements, highway twinning and adding fencing and crossing structures.

Parks Canada and Canadian Pacific are now working on a five-year research project to find ways to reduce bear mortality along the tracks through the park.
