You may have heard stories about the stupidest criminals, but one in West Kelowna early Thursday could just be the unluckiest.
An ironic twist thwarted what looked to be an attempted break and enter in West Kelowna when a man tried to get into the home of an owner of a security systems company.
Steven Wright, who operates Terracom Systems, captured footage of a man trying to get into the front door of his Smith Creek home around 3 a.m. But, luckily for Wright and his young family, the man was scared off by three security cameras on the front porch.
“A fellow on a BMX bike walked onto our property with a flashlight, cutting tools, and what looked to be a gun,” said Wright. “As he turned around he (saw) my camera and hustled out of there.”
Wright’s cameras captured a close-up picture of the man on his property, clearly surprised by the high-tech security features.
Wright says, however, he’s still not at ease-even with the cameras patrolling all sides of his home.
“My kids were just on the other side of that window sleeping. It was a vulnerable feeling to know that somebody with that intent was just on the other side of my door. I wonder if he had not seen the cameras what his next step would have been.”
Wright’s video has gained a lot of attention online, reaching more than 50,000 people in two days. He’s also turned the footage over to RCMP, who are investigating.
