CALGARY- One month after an expense scandal, the Chair of the University of Calgary’s Board of Governors has announced he’s stepping down.
In September, Doug Black-a Senator-in-Waiting-came under fire for $28,030 worth of expenses billed to the University for expensive hotel rooms and fancy dinners.
The FOIP request also uncovered two cheques to the University from Black for $5,343.86 dated August 1, 2012 and $56 dated August 22, 2012 to reimburse executive class flight and liquor expenses that were “processed in error.”
That led to outrage from the Canadian Taxpayers Federation.
On Friday, Black informed U of C’s Board of Governors that he is resigning.
“I also want to make the university community aware that I have paid back to the university, all expenses that I incurred during my time as Chair,” he said in a statement. “I appreciate the public duty that comes with that position and I have learned a valuable lesson,” he says. “I will continue to advocate for the crucial role of post-secondary education in Canada, as it is the key to ensuring Canada’s ongoing competitiveness and prosperity.”
Black served on the Board for five years. He said he will now focus on leadership responsibilities in the other community organizations he’s involved with.
