Some Abbotsford firefighters had a close call battling a blaze at a furniture manufacturing plant on Monday.

The call came in during the afternoon about the hopper behind the Woodworks Furniture Factory at 2320 Peardonville Road.

Crews were in the midst of dousing flames when suddenly a cloud of sawdust ignited, engulfing three firefighters in a fireball.

They were protected by their gear and surprisingly, no one was hurt.

The fire was put out not long after.

“In the wrong conditions it can be very dangerous, so it has a bit of a concussion feel to it, but again in the wrong conditions that can really hurt somebody,” said Asst. Fire Chief Ron Hull. “But everybody’s fine.”

Abbotsford Fire Department will be doing its own investigation with a more comprehensive investigation to be completed within 30 days.

Woodworks has not been cited for any dust-related issues in the past. WorkSafeBC has been called and is working with the fire department to determined why the fire happened in the hopper.
