Safety on Highway 881 a major concern for area residents

Safety on Highway 881 is an ongoing concern for nearby residents. An event was held on Wednesday, in hopes of raising awareness for highway safety.

Organized by the Fort Mcmurray First Nation No. 468, the event was held at the intersection of Stoney Mountain Road and Highway 881.

Concerned residents gathered to slow down traffic in order to hand out brochures to drivers, which provided statistics on fatalities and accidents on Highway 881.

Since July 4, 2012 four people have been killed in collisions along the highway. In 2011, over 4,200 vehicles travelled the highway every day, which amounts to about 1.5 million vehicles in one year.
