Inmate clinging to life after beating in Calgary Remand Centre

An inmate from the Calgary Remand Centre is in life-threatening condition after a brutal beating Friday.

Calgary Police Duty Inspector’s office confirmed police were called at 9:50 a.m.

Sources say the male inmate was rushed to the Foothills hospital and remains in the intensive care unit (ICU) Saturday.

Global News has learned the victim was on suicide watch when he was attacked by another inmate.

The suspect in the case is well known to police and has a history of violent offences.

Calgary police are investigating, led by the centralized general investigation unit (CGIS).

Alberta Justice will be called in to find out how this could happen in remand.

The centre houses male and female inmates who are awaiting trial or waiting for transfers to other facilities, parolees whose parole has been suspended or revoked and detainees under the federal Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

Sources say the entire incident was caught on CCTV surveillance video.

The suspect faces a possible charge of attempted murder, which would be upgraded if the victim doesn’t survive.
