‘Grease’ fan theory suggests Danny and Sandy were dead all along

Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta star in 'Grease.'. Paramount Pictures

A new fan theory has surfaced on Reddit, speculating that Danny and Sandy were dead for the majority of the 1978 film, Grease.

According to the theory, the clues lie scattered throughout the film, most notably using the flying car as a metaphor for Sandy’s ascent to heaven. The theory suggests that Sandy, played by Olivia Newton-John, enters into a coma and eventually dies on the beach after Danny (John Travolta) fails to save her from drowning.

The theory goes on to state that the movie ends far too happily, as Rizzo ends up not pregnant after all with Kenickie realizing he truly loves her. Everything wraps up nicely, “just the way sweet Sandy would have wanted it be,” according to the Redditor.

An alternate theory suggests that it may be Danny who died on the beach, and the entire film is a a coma-vision of how he would have liked his life to play out: romance, dream car, high school graduation, and beating his rival.

This isn’t the first time a fan theory has changed the way we see some of our favourite movies; some other doozies include the postulation that the shipwreck in Disney favourite Tarzan was responsible for the absent parents in Frozen, that Ferris Bueller didn’t actually exist in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Toy Story 3 is actually about the Holocaust.
