The incident occurred this past Monday night around 6:45 PM at the Citgo gas station in Farmington, Connecticut.

As captured on the gas station’s security camera, a black SUV is seen backing out of a parking spot at high speed, before inexplicably altering course and slamming into one of the gas pumps.

“The first thing I saw was gasoline and an explosion on the passenger window,” eyewitness Steve Delaura told WFSB News.

A large fire breaks out immediately following the crash. As the driver of the SUV flees his vehicle, a woman seen pumping gas on the opposite side of the pump rushes to get her two children out of the backseat of her car.

“There was a lot of popping, a lot of black smoke. It was really thick where you couldn’t see through it,” another eyewitness, Audrey Maxwell-Brown, said.

Luckily, the unidentified woman is able to free the two kids only moments before the flames completely consume her black sedan.

Video of the close call was released to the public by the Farmington Police Department. They say the driver who caused the crash was a 70-year-old man, who mistakenly hit the gas instead of the brake while reversing.

While the damage to the gas station and several vehicles was extensive, there are no reports of any injuries as a result of the fire.

The investigation into the accident is ongoing and it is not known at this time if the driver will be facing any charges.
