Nine people were injured at a religious festival in Peru on Sunday after a bull rampaged through crowds.

The festival in Ayacucho Province honours patron saint Ana and features a traditional bull running event.

But celebrations turned to horror after the bull attacked festival goers with its horns, throwing one man up in the air.

Others tried to distract the bull but to no avail. No deaths in the bull running were reported.

After the bull was removed, the religious festival resumed as per normal, with faithful carrying Catholic imagery through the streets.

Bull fighting is still legal in Peru but animal activists have been fighting to outlaw the practice inherited from Spain.
