It’s getting a bit crowded in Mike Hopcraft’s house, not only with his own family but with almost 60 reptiles taking up residence.
Hopcraft, known as the ‘Reptile Guy’, rescues unwanted and forgotten reptiles, and is trying to raise $10,000 to move his Abbotsford rescue and education business into a larger facility. He said in the last two weeks alone he has taken in 14 turtles, one python and one frog.
“Literally I got an email about two minutes ago about two more turtles that need homes,” he said.

“We’re getting animals in all the time.”
Hopcraft said he wants to expand the rescue to not only take in more animals, but also to educate the public about reptiles and the responsibility required to own one.
The rescue operation will continue regardless, but with this new facility he will be able to build features such as a walk-in tortoise enclosure, and it will be open to the public.
“One of our biggest hurdles is finding a building that will allow reptiles,” he said.
This building does, and it becomes available October 1st.
Hopcraft has managed to raise almost $6,000 so far, but if you would like to donate to expand the rescue, check out their webpage where you can donate to the cause.
