TORONTO – According to Britain’s National Pig Association (NPA) a worldwide shortage of pork and bacon products looms in the coming year due to a combination of a declining pig herd and high-feed costs.
In case of a pork shortage, what else could you eat to get your bacon fix? Here is a list of some alternatives.
Turkey bacon – According to Butterball Canada, its turkey bacon has 50 per cent less fat than the real thing. It’s also ‘slowly smoked over hardwood chips’ to give it a more authentic bacon taste.
Fakon (veggie bacon or vacon) – Made with water, gluten and soy protein, veggie bacon is a popular alternative for vegan, vegetarian and kosher eaters.

Macon – Made from mutton, this bacon alternative resembles real bacon mostly because of its texture and colour. Some sources say macon is popular amongst certain religious groups who cannot consume pork products.
Tofu – Made of cultured soybeans, this processed meat-free alternative to bacon absorbs flavours really well, so it’s easy to mimic bacon’s smoky taste. Usually served in thick blocks, it can be easily shaped to look like bacon.
Tempeh– Some say this fermented soybean and bean mixture is the best substitute for pork, since it has a darker appearance than tofu, but still keeps its firm texture. Just like pork, it can be fried, barbecued or used in stir fry dishes.
