Okotoks eliminates population cap

Okotoks is allowing its community to grow.

After 14 years, the town has eliminated its cap on population growth.

Okotoks town council voted five to two on Monday to lift a cap on growth.

The cap was put in place in 1998 to hold the population at 30,000, because of concerns over water supply.

The population has been on a steady increase since 2006 when it was just over 17,000.

Now the population of Okotoks sits at 24,962, according to the latest census numbers from 2011.

The water supply comes from the Sheep River, but it can only handle a population 32,000 people.

Now the town has to arrange for a regional water system using water from the Bow River or another source.

Okotoks town council says the option of a Calgary pipeline will not be pursued at this time.

Instead, they will continue to lobby the Province to consider new legislation that would allow for water conservation methods used in other countries, such as the use of grey water, rain water harvesting, etc.

It will also have to annex land from the M.D. of Foothills to accommodate more growth.
