The rivers were full of rafters, city paths were packed with cyclists, and parks were hopping as Calgarians dusted off their sunscreen this weekend.
August 19 to 21 will likely go down as the warmest, driest weekend of the 2016 summer in Calgary.
It’s been mentioned that we had one of the wettest Julys on record and Calgary had exceeded its annual precipitation total by early August.

But this weekend actually felt like summer start to finish.
NOT HARD TO BEAT
If we look at the data from what most people consider summer, July and August, there has been rain at least two of the three days of every single weekend this summer.
The two-month stretch actually started off on a positive note. July 1 to 3 was the driest weekend up until now.

There was only a trace amount of rain recorded at the Calgary International Airport two of those days, meaning the official reading for precipitation would be less than 0.4 mm that weekend.
Then if you average out the daytime highs from that same weekend, the average high temperature worked out to 24 degrees Celsius. That was the third warmest weekend of the summer, July 22 to 24 averaged 24.1 degrees for daytime highs.

ROCK BOTTOM
The coldest weekend of the summer, again just looking at average daytime highs for Friday through Sunday, was the final weekend of Stampede, July 15 to 17. The peak temperatures those three days fluctuated between 14 and 20 degrees Celsius.
The wettest weekend of the summer was the final weekend of that month, July 29 to 31. A total of 53.4 mm of rain fell that weekend which is about 80 percent of the average monthly rainfall for July.

From August 19 through 21 the daily high temperature has fluctuated between 21.3 to 27.3 degrees Celsius making this the warmest weekend of the summer, with an average high of 24.6 degrees Celsius.
Add in the fact that there has not been any rain and it will go down as the warmest and the driest weekend of the summer.
There is still one more weekend left in August but at this point the temperatures don’t look like they will change these stats. The forecasted highs for August 26 to 28 are between 20 to 22 degrees Celsius.
