Sally Hnatiuk said she had no idea what would happen when her boyfriend told her he had a surprise for her one afternoon.

Hnatiuk and John Yokimas had been dating for more than three years when Yokimas decided it was time to pop the question in a huge way.

He arranged for a gift certificate for a plane ride in St. Andrews on Aug. 12.

“I thought the plane ride was the only surprise,” Hnatiuk told Global News Friday.

Once they were in the air, Yokimas suggested they fly over one of his wheat fields.

“We were just enjoying the ride, taking pictures. Then John pointed out which field he wanted me to see. I turned to him and asked if he wrote something in the field.

“I looked back at the words and couldn’t believe my eyes.”

Yokimas had tilled the words “I Love U Sally, Will U Marry Me?” into the wheat.

When she turned back, he was handing her a ring. It’s not much of a surprise that she said yes.

“I think he said that each letter was 90 feet tall,” Hnatiuk said. “His grandpa farmed that field, his dad farmed it. It’s been in his family for over 100 years. It really means a lot.”

The couple have tentatively set their sights on October 2017 to tie the knot.
