KELOWNA – The Regional District of Central Okanagan is banning campfires in municipalities and electoral areas under its jurisdiction.

That includes the City of West Kelowna, District of Lake Country, District of Peachland, Westbank First Nation and the Central Okanagan East and West Electoral Areas.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The ban, because of extreme fire hazards, takes effect Friday at noon.

In a news release the regional district states: “Violators could receive a fine and be charged the cost of the fire department response to a burning complaint. Residents are encouraged to report anyone who is illegally burning by calling the Regional Fire Dispatch Centre at 250-469-8577.”

Campfires are not permitted at any time within the City of Kelowna.

The district reminds people smoking is not allowed in any RDCO regional park or municipal park in Kelowna and West Kelowna.
