The city of Halifax is advising residents to be extra cautious during the Wednesday morning commute, as heavy rain could cause flooding.

The city says flooding is anticipated in low-lying areas across the municipality, “due to a combination of extremely dry soil and what is expected to be rapidly falling rain over a short period of time.”

Environment Canada is calling for heavy rain of anywhere from 20-40 millimetres in the morning for the Halifax region, prompting them to issue a special weather statement. They also say amounts could reach 50 millimetres in come areas.

The city says dry soil across much of the region makes for very little absorption of rain water.

City staff were busy Tuesday afternoon, ensuring catch basins aren’t clogged, so water can flow easily. Residents are also being asked clear pathways for the rain by checking catch basins and removing debris.
