A 34-year-old woman and her two-month-old baby escaped without serious injury when they were struck by a vehicle while crossing the street in St. Albert late last week.

At around 6:55 p.m. Friday, RCMP said the woman was pushing her daughter in a stroller in a crosswalk along Hebert Road near Sunset Boulevard when they were struck by a car leaving the parking lot beside the area Tim Hortons.

Police said the 21-year-old driving the car was travelling about 10 kilometres per hour at the time.

The collision caused the woman to land on the hood of the car. The baby stroller was knocked over. The woman was also walking her dog at the time. The animal ran away when the collision happened and it’s not known if the dog was hit.

The mother and her daughter were taken to hospital as a precaution and returned home later that evening.

RCMP said road and weather conditions were good at the time and alcohol is not a factor. However, police believe the sun may have interfered with the driver’s vision at the intersection.

“Drivers must always exercise extreme caution, especially when visibility is reduced by snow, rain or even sunlight,” Cpl. Laurel Kading with the St. Albert RCMP said Tuesday.

“Drivers must always check intersection crosswalks for pedestrians before starting to drive, especially when turning.”

The 21-year-old man driving the car was given a ticket for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. The ticket comes with a $776 fine.
