Rio 2016: Andre De Grasse to compete in 200-metre semifinal

Canadian sprinter Andre De Grasse will compete in the semifinal in the 200-metre sprint.

De Grasse, 21, finished his preliminary heat Tuesday morning in a time of 20.09 seconds – the best time posted in the preliminary round, although he relaxed and slowed toward the end of the race. Fellow Canadian Aaron Brown also qualified with a time of 20.23 seconds, but Brendan Rodney did not. Both came in third in their respective heats.

The semifinals are scheduled for Wednesday evening.

De Grasse took home a bronze medal in the men’s 100-metre sprint on Sunday. Jamaican track star Usain Bolt won gold and American sprinter Justin Gatlin won silver. De Grasse’s time of 9.91 seconds was a personal best.

Bolt also won his 200-metre heat and will compete in the semifinals Wednesday.
