Winnipeg swimmer Chantal Van Landeghem has moved a step closer to her second medal of the 2016 Rio Olympics by qualifying for the 50m freestyle semifinals.

The 22-year-old finished in a tie for eighth in Friday morning’s heats with a time of 24.57 seconds. The top 16 swimmers advanced to the next round.
Van Landeghem finished fourth in the same event at the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto.
The 50m freestyle semifinals are set for Friday evening. The finals will place on Saturday.

Van Landeghem helped Canada capture its first medal of the Rio Games last week by winning bronze in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay. The former Manta Swim Club member also placed 10th in the 100m freestyle.
