Rio 2016: Manitobans to watch at the Summer Olympics

WATCH: Roundup of the Manitoba athletes competing during the Rio Olympics.

The Rio Olympics kicked off Friday night, and if you’re looking for someone to cheer for, a number Manitoba athletes will be competing.

Of the 300 plus Canadian athletes heading to to Rio, Brazil for the Olympics, 11 are from Manitoba. Among then, eight are first time Olympians. There also also three local Paralympic athletes performing.

Sarah-Anne Brault

Biography

Winnipeg-grown, Québécois triathlete Sarah-Anne Brault will make her Olympic debut in Rio. Brault was an alternate to Canada’s triathlon team for the 2012 Olympics. She’s a two-time ITU World Cup medalist and was the junior Pan American Champion in 2008.

Biography

Pro volleyball player and former Wesmen, Justin Duff joins Canada’s first Olympic indoor men’s volleyball team in 24 years. The six-foot-seven middle is a former first team CIS All-Canadian and was chosen as the Wesmen’s athlete of the year in 2010. The now 28-year-old Duff played four seasons with the Wesmen from 2006-2010.

Biography

Chantal Givens will make history as a part of Canada’s first paratriathlon team in the inaugural paratriathlon event. She is a three-time Canadian Paratriathlon champion and has placed fourth at the World Championships twice.

Biography

The Games will mark Leah Kirchmann’s first Olympics. Kirchmann finished third in the inaugural La course by Le Tour de France in 2014. The following year, she placed second in the road race and third in the time trial at the Canadian championships. Kirchmann won a silver medal in the road race at the 2012 Pan American Championships.

Meghan Montgomery has emerged from retirement in hopes of capturing Canada’s first Paralympic medal in rowing.

Montgomery competed in the mixed  plus event at the Beijing Paralympic Games, and four years later at the London Paralympic Games.

Biography

Tyker Mislawchuk represented Canada at the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto where he finished 10th. The 21-year-old also had two 10th place finishes this season on the ITU World Triathlon Series. Mislawchuk began competing internationally in 2011.

Biography

Isabela Onyshko broke onto the international scene in 2014, winning medals at World Cup events in Croatia and Qatar.

Onyshko represented Canada at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where her team placed fourth and she placed seventh all-around. Onyshko also helped Canada finish 12th at the 2014 World Artistic Gymnastic Championships.

Onyshko placed first in this year’s Elite Canada competition. She also captured a silver medal at the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto.

Biography

Sophie Schmidt is a two-time Olympian who was part of Canada’s bronze medal performance at London 2012. Schmidt has competed at three editions of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2007, 2011 and 2015. She also won a gold medal with Canada at the 2011 Pan Am Games in Guadalajara. From 2011 to 2015, Schmidt played in 76 consecutive international matches for Canada.

Biography

Midfielder, Desiree Scott made her Olympic debut in 2012 in London, where Canada finished third. It was the first-ever Olympic medal for Canada’s women’s soccer team.

Scott was born and raised in Winnipeg and was a member of the inaugural women’s soccer team at the University of Manitoba in 2005. She has played professionally since 2006 and is currently a member of FC Kansas City.
