A Saint-Lazare farmer is asking the public to keep a lookout for her cow and calf, who escaped from their enclosure around 8 a.m. Thursday.
Jessica Ferguson Lapolla said she doesn’t understand how the pair hoofed it off of her farm on Chemin Saint-Louis in Saint-Lazare, just off the western tip of the island of Montreal.
“It was either over or under,” she said, referring to the enclosure they were in, which was intact but empty.
“We’ve been searching for her ever since. We did spot her around 1 p.m. [Thursday] afternoon, but she got spooked and ran into the woods.”
Lapolla is a third-year agriculture student at McGill University.
She’s starting out as a farmer and has had horses, goats and chickens for years.
This marks her foray into cattle.
There are 400 acres of woods behind Lapolla’s farm and her neighbours have been helping her track down the bolting bovine, but with little success so far.
“She moves pretty fast,” said Denis Gravel, a neighbour.
“She’s a bit wild.”
Lapolla is taking the story of her runaway cattle with a sense of humour.
“One day, we’re going to look back and laugh at this,” she said.
“I just hope it happens sooner rather than later.”
