GREENSLADE DONE

It’s a major blow for the Alberta Golden Bears as one of their vets is done for the year. Third year linebacker Tyler Greenslade suffered a ruptured achilles in Friday’s loss to the Regina Rams. In an email to Global News, Golden Bears Head Coach Jeff Stead said, “It hurts. He’s not only a great player but a great leader and person”. Greenslade missed half of the 2011 season with an injury as well.

WEEK THREE RECAP

The drive for five is very much alive for the Calgary Dinos. The four time defending Hardy Cup Champions are the only undefeated team in the Canada West after a 33-12 win over the Manitoba Bisons. Led by third year quarterback, Eric Dzwilewski, the Dinos are by far the top team in the West and look destined to become the first team to ever win five straight Canada West Championships. Dzwilewski completed 23-of-32 passes for 329 yards and three touchdowns in Saturday’s win over the Bisons.

Playing through injury, UBC Thunderbirds quarterback Billy Greene had a solid outing against the Saskatchewan Huskies. Greene completed 22-of-35 passes for 290 yards and a touchdown in a 39-34 loss to Saskatchewan.

Saskatchewan managed to squeak out a win on the West Coast thanks to an impressive performance by receiver Kit Hillis. The third year vet is an early favorite to be named Canada West MVP as he’s quickly become one of Drew Burko’s favorite targets. In Saturday’s win against UBC, Hillis put up some massive numbers with 14 catches (1 shy of tying a single game conference record), for 224 yards and three touchdowns. For his efforts, Hillis was named Canada West Offensive Player of the Week.

Calgary Dinos Defensive Lineman Michael Klassen was named Canada West Defensive Player of the Week. Klassen recorded three tackles, 1.5 sacks and an interception in Calgary’s win over Manitoba.

The losing streak is over for the McGill Redmen. They snapped a 23-game losing streak with a 36-9 win over the Mount Allison Mounties. It was McGill’s first victory since October 3rd, 2009 when they defeated Bishop’s 21-19.

Depending on whom you ask, the current CIS Football losing streak is held by either the Alberta Golden Bears or Mount Allison Mounties. Alberta has technically lost 12-straight games (playoffs included) but is officially credited with a pair of victories in 2011 due to UBC fielding an ineligible player. Alberta’s last on-field victory was November 6th, 2010 when they upset Saskatchewan 31-30 in the Canada West Semi Finals. Their last regular season victory was October 23rd, 2010 when they beat Manitoba 46-21. Mount Allison has lost 11-straight games (playoffs included). Their last victory was October 30th, 2010 when they beat St. FX 33-12. Toronto holds the CIS Record for longest losing streak at 49-games (7-seasons).

LOOKING AHEAD

Two games highlight Week Four of the CIS Football schedule.

The KROWN Canadian University Football Game of the Week on Shaw TV will feature the Battle of Saskatchewan. The Huskies host the Regina Rams on Friday Night at Griffiths Stadium. Over 7,000 fans are expected to attend this highly anticipated contest between these two rivals.

Out east, all eyes on the only undefeated teams in Ontario as the defending Vanier Cup Champion McMaster Marauders host the Queen’s Gaels. McMaster is averaging 54-points per game while Queen’s is averaging about 36. So while you’d expect to see an offensive explosion, don’t forget about their defence. Both teams are averaging 15 or less points per game. In other words, it’ll be the ultimate chess match on Saturday Afternoon between the top teams in the OUA.
