Rio 2016: Winnipeg’s Chantal Van Landeghem misses out on 100m freestyle final

Winnipeg swimmer Chantal Van Landeghem failed to advance to the final of the women’s 100m freestyle at the 2016 Rio Olympics on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old placed 10th in the semifinals with a time of 54.00. Her finish was 0.47 seconds back of a qualifying berth.

Van Landeghem earned a spot in the semifinals by clocking a time of 53.89 seconds in the preliminaries for a ninth place finish.

She won gold in the same event at the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto.

The former Manta Swim Club member helped Canada capture its first medal of the Rio Games on Saturday by winning bronze in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay. She will also swim in the 50m freestyle event.
