Toronto police officer now facing third charge in death of suicidal teen: SIU

A Toronto police officer already charged in connection with the death of a suicidal teen in High Park is now facing an additional count of breach of trust.

The province’s police watchdog said a citizen sought the assistance of an officer regarding a suicide attempt by a 19-year-old man at the park the afternoon of Feb. 2. The man was declared dead roughly an hour later.

Const. Kyle Upjohn was charged in June with criminal negligence causing death and failing to provide the necessities of life.

The Special Investigations Unit announced Thursday, Upjohn’s court date, that he is now also charged with breach of trust by a public officer.

The SIU did not explain the additional charge and said it would not comment further as the matter is before the courts.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
