Residents in Okanagan Falls have long been asking for a pedestrian-controlled crosswalk to make crossing Highway 97 safer.

Many residents have similar experiences crossing Highway 97 and Cedar Avenue, saying motorists usually don’t stop for pedestrians.

“Many times I try to cross with my husband. And many times we almost got hit,” resident Barbara Mulrooney said.

On Wednesday morning, about 50 residents gathered at the corner of the busy  intersection as a petition was presented to the local MLA.

Pat Burton organized the petition, gathering 1151 signatures in support of pedestrian signals.

“We shouldn’t have to petition but it seems like this is the only way we’d get some action,” Burton said.

MLA Linda Larson said she has already spoken to the B.C. Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, and is confident the project will get approval.

“I have no doubt that you will get a crossing here that is safe,” she told the crowd.

Burton said this is just the beginning, adding there are other highway intersections that need attention, such as Highway 97 and 9th Avenue, and Highway 97 and 10th Avenue.
