Taber corn is golden and flying off the shelves in 2016

WATCH ABOVE: Taber corn hit the stands over the weekend, and as Global’s Sarah Komadina reports, it would seem both producers and consumers are happy with what they’re seeing and tasting – Aug 3, 2016

Dave Jensen has been growing corn for 35 years and says crops are healthy and right on time in 2016.

He planted his 250 acres of corn early and said he had a good start in April when weather was warm.

“The temperature was great, but you have to be careful because … you get the corn up, along comes some warm weather, and it freezes it and that is exactly what happened,” he said.

Weather quickly turned around and now the season is looking good.

“We have the right soil for good corn growing, irrigation and we have warm weather,” he said. “You add those three things together and we have Taber corn!”

There are stops like the one in Taber in various locations across Alberta including Lethbridge and Medicine Hat. More locations will be added throughout the week, and people only have about six to seven weeks to enjoy the season.

Most corn booths are open eight hours a day, seven days a week. Producers sometimes need several truck loads of corn to keep the stock up.

It might sound corny, but it’s a time Lolly Turner looks forward to. She’s been helping sell for over 14 years.

“They’ll come and they’ll check out the corn and want to know varieties, they love to know about corn, what kind it is.”

For Jensen, it’s one of the busiest times of the year.

“Enjoy the six or seven weeks that it’s out because the rest of the year you have to buy frozen corn, tin corn,” he said.
