WINNIPEG — Ten kids and their parents were startled awake after waking up to choking on smoke in their home Monday morning.
Winnipeg fire crews said the fire at the home on the 300 block of Victor Street started around 7:45 a.m. Monday at the back of the home.
The owner of the home, Martha Hudson, said she was up late last night unpacking her things as her family just moved back in to their old home Sunday. The same home her son, Wolfgang, died in last year from cancer. The home her other 10 children were hoping to spend time in and remember the brother they lost.
Hudson said instead of celebrating her other son’s fourth birthday Monday, like the family had originally planned, they were woken up to the back of their home on fire, choking on smoke, wrangling the children and running out of their home with just the shirts on their backs.
Hudson’s son Junior said he’s heartbroken that the memories of his brother have been destroyed in the home and he hopes they’ll be able to patch it up and return home soon. For now, they’ll remain at Martha Hudson’s mother’s place while they wait for their home.

Platoon Chief Brian Marchak said with that many people coming out of one house on fire, everyone is lucky to have escaped with no injuries.
An investigation is still on-going but Hudson said she doesn’t know what exactly started the fire. However, she said she did hear a noise at the back of her house early Monday morning where the fire later started.
Fire crews said they were able to respond quickly and stop the fire from spreading to the two homes on either side of the fire.
