Severe thunderstorm watches issued throughout southern Alberta

Environment Canada issued several severe thunderstorm watches throughout southern Alberta on Tuesday, including Calgary and Lethbridge.

The warnings, issued just after 11 a.m., suggest thunderstorms are likely to develop in the afternoon.

“Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, damaging hail and heavy rain,” warned Environment Canada.

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce large hail, damaging winds or torrential rainfall.

Areas under a severe thunderstorm watch include:

Airdrie – Cochrane – Olds – Sundre

Brooks – Strathmore – Vulcan

Cardston – Fort Macleod – Magrath

City of Calgary

Crowsnest Pass – Pincher Creek – Waterton Lakes Nat. Park

Cypress Hills Provincial Park – Foremost

Lethbridge – Taber – Milk River

Medicine Hat – Bow Island – Suffield

Nordegg – Forestry Trunk Road Highway 734

Okotoks – High River – Claresholm

Rocky Mountain House – Caroline
