Harper ends APEC summit with Canada-China trade deal

VLADIVOSTOCK, Russia – Prime Minister Harper met with Chinese President Hu Jintao this morning before the APEC leaders wrapped up their summit in Russia.

Harper went to the summit to advance his pro-Asia trade agenda — and the meeting with Hu was considered the centrepiece of his trip.

The two leaders presided over the signing of the Canada-China Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement.

The agreement was announced during Harper’s visit to China in February and is designed to protect Canadian investors doing business in China.

Harper is keen to narrow Canada’s giant trade deficit with China by tapping its huge market, and thus reducing Canada’s reliance on exporting to the sputtering U.S. market.

The PM said China’s proposed take over of an Alberta oil and gas company wasn’t mentioned during the Hu meeting because it’s still under review by his government.
