MONTREAL – A workman at the bottom of the foundation of the new CHUM hospital complex was lifted out by crane on a stretcher Friday morning, according to eyewitness accounts.
A site security official, who spoke on condition that his name not be published, said the worker is a carpenter who fell “about six feet” about 6:45 a.m. while working at the Centre Hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal site.

He was placed in a back brace “as a precaution” before being lifted to the surface dangling on the end of one of the four giant construction cranes on site, a vertical voyage of “about 75 feet.”
The evacuation was complete shortly after 8 a.m.
Eric Hardie, an executive of the Construction Santé Montréal group building the hospital complex, said the group would have no immediate comment.
He noted details would be provided later.
The worker apparently sustained bruising to his back and a cut on the back of his head of “maybe an inch,” said the security official.
