Calgary man charged in attack on 83-year-old found in downtown alley

A 19-year-old Calgary man has been charged in relation to an attack that left an 83-year-old man seriously injured in a downtown alley almost two weeks ago. Police credit members of the public for their “critical assistance” in the investigation.

The victim was discovered suffering from multiple traumatic injuries in the 100 block of 2 Avenue S.E., just south of the Centre Street Bridge, at around 8:30 a.m. July 8. He remained in hospital in serious, stable condition Wednesday.

Witnesses told investigators they heard a man yelling and then saw a slim man wearing white pants and a black hoodie run from the alley with a dark backpack.

Calgary police received a tip from the public after the release of CCTV photos of the suspect. A man was arrested Tuesday. Police said they seized an imitation firearm and 3.9 grams of cocaine.

A search warrant executed Wednesday at a residence in the 200 block of Doverview Cres. S.E. yielded a loaded 38-caliber Smith and Wesson revolver, along with “numerous items pertaining to the investigation,” police said.

Mark Angelo Julom faces numerous charges related to weapons and drugs as well as aggravated assault.

He is set to appear in court Thursday.
