FSIN concerned over federal funding cuts

The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN) says a cut in funding should not affect its operations.

The federal government is reducing core funding from 1.6-million dollars to 500-thousand dollars.

That funding supports the FSIN finance department, legislative assemblies, communications, treasury board and the political offices of the chief and vice-chiefs.

“The funding cut is an attempt to drastically affect the abilities of the FSIN to represent our people and communities,” said interim FSIN chief Morley Watson.

Watson says the reduction is also an attempt to restrict the FISN from working with First Nations in areas like education, health and economic development.

The FSIN does not expect there to be any immediate changes to services and staff as a result of the funding cut.

According to Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada, the cuts will not affect individual band funding.
