Winnipeg police warn public about tax scam

WINNIPEG — If you get a call from someone claiming to be from the Canada Revenue Agency and urging you to pay your back taxes with gift cards – it’s a scam.

The Winnipeg police took to social media Friday to warn the public about an increase in fraud related reports, especially someone phoning to say taxes are owed.

Police said the suspect demands payment of back taxes using gift cards in order to clear up the outstanding amount.

Members of the public are encouraged not to engage these callers, and not to send money or payment of any form, police said.
