Crash kills motorcyclist; other driver faces criminal charges

KELOWNA – A crash on Highway 33 east of Kelowna has claimed the life of a motorcyclist from Alberta.

The 35-year-old was driving in the Joe Rich area when he hit a deer near Falcon Road at about 10:15 Thursday night.

That caused the Honda motorcycle to cross into the oncoming lane where it collided with Nissan car.

“During the investigator’s interaction with the driver of the Nissan, at the collision scene, signs and symptoms of possible alcohol intoxication were detected,” said RCMP Cst. Jesse O’Donaghey in a news release.

“A demand was made of the driver who provided samples of his breath into a roadside device which resulted in a FAIL. The man was arrested and taken to the Kelowna RCMP Detachment for additional testing where he provided breath samples in excess of the legal limit,” said O’Donaghey.

The 31-year-old Kelowna man was released from custody for a later court date and could be charged with impaired driving causing bodily harm.

Traffic was detoured for several hours while an RCMP collision reconstructionist examined the scene.

RCMP are asking anyone who saw the crash to call Central Okanagan Traffic Services at 250-980-5353.
