Missed utility charges lead to big bill

Homeowners be warned: even if you pay your utility bill in full every month, you could still be hit with a big invoice.

Melissa Gogol moved into a new home in Skyview Ranch four years ago, and always pays her Enmax bill. So, she was surprised to get a call from them last week, saying she owed over $600 for water use.

It turns out that when the city installed her water meter, the new account was never reported to Enmax.

Gogol said she never noticed she wasn’t being charged for water, since her bill is directly debited from her account.

“It’s frustrating. You put your trust in the company to bill you correctly, and they’ve haven’t,” Gogol said.

The company can legally charge for a one year’s worth of statements, but said they will only bill Gogol for three months of use. An Enmax spokesperson said they hope new technology will help them avoid similar problems in the future.

“We do have a new reporting system in place that has started to catch some of these errors,” said Ian Todd. “Hopefully we’ll be able to rectify these over the course of time.”

The company recommends customers review every bill to ensure all the charges are there and are accurate.
