Busy section of Edmonton’s Whyte Avenue closed after truck strikes and kills cyclist

EDMONTON – Police closed off westbound traffic on busy 82nd Avenue between 100th Street and Gateway Boulevard late Monday morning after a cyclist was struck and killed by a concrete mixer truck at 101st Street.

Police have not yet confirmed the fatality, but around 10 a.m. a body could be seen covered by a yellow tarp behind the truck, the vehicle’s mixer still rotating.

A glum-looking man in a uniform could be seen resting his chin on his arm at the open side door of an ambulance.

Amelie Caron was sitting at Da Capo Cafe when she saw truck stop suddenly, but didn’t witness the cyclist getting hit.

A shaken Emma Hjartarson saw the victim on the ground, covered with the tarp.

“This just seems to be a really big problem area,” Hjartarson said of that stretch of Whyte Avenue. At the crosswalk nearby, “people get hit there all the time,” she said.
