WINNIPEG — A month after tent caterpillars were swarming our trees, Winnipeggers can brace themselves for a new pest that’s starting to show it’s fuzzy face. The tent caterpillars are starting to turn into North American moths.
Entomologist Taz Stuart said while they’re gross, they are harmless and won’t eat the leaves off your trees. Walls around Winnipeg are starting to be covered in them and Stuart said it’s going to get a lot worse.

“They usually like light and dark colors, and they’re attracted to light,” Stuart said. “They are active at night, and sleep during the day.”
Based on this season’s tent caterpillar population, Stuart said there’s the potential to see as many as 500 million of the brown, furry moths in Winnipeg.
The best way to get rid of them is just to spray them down, or use a broom and brush them off the old fashioned way.
