MONTREAL – The Snowdon Deli is celebrating its 70th anniversary this month and co-owner Hart Fishman couldn’t be happier.
“It’s been a big, local community centre for the Jewish community in Montreal,” said Fishman.
“I take a lot of pride in continuing that.”
Fishman became a part owner four years ago.
His grandfather Phil, the brother of co-founders Abe and Joe, was a manager during the 1950’s through the 1970’s.
“We’ve withstood the test of time,” added Fishman.

Customers of Snowdon Deli tend to stay loyal.
Multiple generations of families sitting at a table is a common sight for Fishman.
Elaine Shouela brought her family back to the Snowdon Deli for a family reunion of her own.
“I used to come here with my grandparents, my parents, my children, now my grandchildren,” said Schouela.
Schouela’s daughter, Jennifer Shein Silver, now lives in Toronto but every time she is back in Montreal, she has to stop by the deli.
“There’s something so familiar and eternal about Snowdon Deli,” said Shein Silver.
“When I think about this place, it reminds me of my childhood, it reminds of so many Sundays spent here with family and it reminds me of home.”
It’s this kind of connection that Fishman attributes to the success of Snowdon Deli.
“We have a long standing relationship with our clients and our clients come from all walks of life, we’ve been serving them since the 40s,” said Fishman.
“I like to stay true to our roots, we have to continue doing better and better into the future that’s for certain, but I think we like it just right here.”
