Water main breaks near Braid SkyTrain Station in New Westminster

Clayton Little/Global News

A broken water main in New Westminster sent a large stream of water shooting into the air Saturday afternoon.

It happened just before 2 p.m. this afternoon near Brunette Avenue and Braid Street. Water gushed well above the SkyTrain tracks, and New Westminster Police say the intersection will be closed to traffic for at least several hours.

Officials have yet to confirm what caused the water main break, but one social media user said it occurred after a construction crew hit a water pipe.

SkyTrain service was closed between Sapperton and Braid stations for several hours, but has since resumed.

Firefighters told Global News the geyser was at least 40 feet high at its peak. They say the area could be closed to traffic for days due to weakened pavement.
