YYC prepares for new air traffic control tower

The YYC will soon be the site of the newest and tallest air traffic control tower in Canada.

NAV CANADA said the 86 metre tower set to open next February is about two months behind schedule, but will still be open a full year before it’s needed.

The project is part of the new runway, scheduled to open in 2014.

The tower will give controllers sight-lines on the country’s longest runways and will have room for nine more workers than the old one.

Michelle Bishop, director of government and public affairs for NAV CANADA said it will also be outfitted with leading-edge technology.

“Controllers are very much looking forward to improved air traffic management tools they can use with a parallel runway,” she said. “There are a lot of benefits to having runways not intersecting, and we think there will be a significant improvement to safety and efficiency at the airport.”
