RCMP seized over $1.4-million worth of marijuana, MDMA and cash following a routine traffic stop on Highway 1 near Banff.
On June 14, the RCMP said its Traffic Services’ Roving Traffic Unit stopped an eastbound vehicle for speeding.
A Parks Canada narcotics detection dog was used, while the driver of the vehicle was detained. RCMP said the dog picked up on the odour of illegal drugs.
A full search of the vehicle uncovered eight grams of marijuana, 23,860 grams of crystallized MDMA and $3,900 in Canadian currency.
“These drugs, and in their quantity, had they reached communities in Alberta could have had a devastating effect on the health and safety of Albertans,” RCMP said in a news release Tuesday.
Stefan Lelic, 22, of Calgary was arrested for possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.
Lelic appeared in court on June 20 and was released on $20,000 cash bail. He will next appear in court on July 20, 2016.
