Warning from West Kelowna fire crews as resident puts out flames, suffers minor burns

WEST KELOWNA — A West Kelowna resident was injured while dousing a balcony fire at their apartment in the 2700 block of Riffington Place Tuesday morning.

It was around 1:30 a.m. when West Kelowna Fire Rescue responded to the blaze.

“When the first crew arrived, they found that the fire had already been knocked down by the resident,” said assistant fire chief Darren Lee in a news release.

“The fire had been confined to the balcony area of a single unit on the main floor of the two-storey garden-style condominium.”

Fire crews prevented remaining hot spots from spreading into the structure and overhauled the fire area.

“Unfortunately, the lone resident from the fire unit suffered minor burn injuries while suppressing the fire and was treated at the scene by WKFR firefighters and B.C. Ambulance paramedics,” said Lee.

It’s believed improperly discarded smoking materials is the cause.

“In this incident the resident was injured suppressing the fire. The actions taken are commendable, however, citizens should ensure that their safety and the safety of others is the top priority while suppressing an incipient fire,” he said.
